All isopods experience some strife at the hands of taxonomy and misidentification, but few more so than the Lava isopods. Originally thought to be an isolated color morph, after further study it was found that these may be an intermediary population of the subspecies Porcellio scaber scaber and Porcellio scaber lusitanus. Anyone who has kept these can agree; they're far more sizeable than your normal scabers, alongside other (comparative) morphological anomalies.
