  • Where are the Dwarf White Isopods?

I've been in isopod keeping for years now, since I started this business with my mom. I've kept some of the easiest and some of the hardest species to culture. Over time, I learned a lot about what species work best or worst for bioactive enclosures, and Dwarf Whites really do seem like the best of the best: hardy, fast-breeding, primarily fossorial... But also aggressive and protein-hungry.

I have witnessed Dwarf Whites, nicknamed aptly by other keepers as "Devil's Rice," chew on reptile eggs as well as live frogs, toads, and geckos. They're pervasive, and have a great talent for finding their way into enclosures and cultures you never put them in. Once in other isopod colonies, they'll eat all the young and molting 'pods until they've totally taken over.

It's for this reason why, around a year ago, I decided to not only stop selling Trichorhina tomentosa "Dwarf White," but I entirely stopped culturing them. I will never again recommend them to a keeper when I know that Trichoniscidae sp. "Dwarf Purple" works just as well and isn't aggressive nor protein hungry.

Good luck with your isopod keeping!
